Italy has decided to suspend funding for the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Saturday.
The decision followed allegations that some UNRWA workers were involved in the October 7 attacks in Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, although Tajani did not directly mention the suspicions.
“The Italian government has suspended funding to UNRWA following the horrific attack on Israel on October 7,” Tajani posted on social media platform X, adding that some of Italy’s allies had already taken the same decision.
