On Monday morning, at the international airport in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Kim Jong-nam, older sibling of Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, was poisoned. Kim Jong-nam was supposed to fly to Macau, but he died on the way to a hospital in the ambulance as a result of the poisoning.
Although it is not clear yet who killed Kim Jong-us, one of the most common assumptions is that he simply became a victim of his brother who wants to get rid of all persons who represent a threat to his regime. Due to his father’s fate, many consider that the next victim could be Kim Jong-nam’s son Kim Han-sol (22).
He is not unknown in this region since in 2012 and 2013 was written about his stay at the International School of the United World College in Mostar. He, as a 17-year-old teenager, gave an interview for Finnish television. He spoke with former Finnish official Elisabeth Rehn, under whose auspices operated a school in Mostar.
A young nephew of North Korean dictator briefly told about his childhood, about how he was born in Pyongyang and later moved to his father in Macao, but still visits his homeland in the summer. He mentioned that he has no friends in the North Korea because he never got close to anybody since he was isolated from the rest of society because of his grandfather, Kim Jong-il.
He also explained that he felt uncomfortable when he arrived in Mostar because of the great attention of the media that found that he enrolled in a local school, but as soon as the pressure stopped, he started to enjoy school. He did not directly criticize his uncle in this interview, but he noted that “he does not know the exact date when Kim Jong-un became dictator”.
However, in some of his interviews given later, Kim Han-sol openly criticized his uncle, mainly on the same lines as his late father Kim Jong-nam for whom he said that they “agree in attitudes.” He stayed in Mostar until 2013 when he graduated from UWC and then moved to France where he enrolled at the Faculty of Sciences Po in Le Havre.
However, life in France was not easy for the young nephew of Kim Jong-un, as he is under police protection since the murder of Jang Sung-taek, uncle and mentor of Kim Jong-nam. He was executed in late 2013 on charges of counter-revolutionary activities of Kim Jong-un, but the French authorities did not want to risk the same fate for Kim Han-sol. Last year, he graduated from the University and returned to China, although it was not clear where exactly he is.
Kim Han-sol (today is 22 years old) is currently located in a special administrative unit in China, according to the South Korean secret service, and his mother and sister live in a building in Macau. It is not known whether they are under the protection, but the media have speculated that the Chinese secret service is protecting them from potential assassination.
As far as other close relatives of Kim Jong-un, his other brother Kim Jong-chol (35) is not considered as a threat because he has not figured himself as a potential dictator of North Korea so far, which does not mean that he will not die in an unusual accident or shoot in an emergency procedure.
