Great Britain: Young Voices Preserve the Memory of Srebrenica

This week, Padgate Academy in Warrington hosted an inspirational event as part of the NEU Poetry Project, dedicated to remembering the Srebrenica genocide. In front of hundreds of students, young poets and authors from eighth grade shared their verses, thoughts, and emotions with seventh-graders, demonstrating how education and art can be a powerful response to hatred, prejudice and oblivion.

Together with Nik Perring and Neil Sledge, the students had the opportunity to learn about one of the darkest pages of European history, as well as the importance of remembrance, human dignity and responsibility to preserve truth for future generations. Through poetry, conversation and collective reflection, the youth showed that remembering Srebrenica is not only part of the past, but an important lesson for the future.

It is especially encouraging to see how the increasing number of young people is included in such projects, which confirms that the messages of survivors, and lessons from Srebrenica continue to live on through education, creativity, and dialogue.

Through their educational programs, Remembering Srebrenica has so far reached over 280,000 children and young people across the United Kingdom, helping new generations understand the importance of human rights, countering hatred, and preserving the truth about genocide.

This year’s commemoration topic, “We Are Here”, is a powerful message that the genocide survivors and their stories are still among us. It honors their bravery, dignity, and resilience, but also reminds us that we all are responsible for preserving truth, nurturing a culture of remembrance, and building a society in which hatred, discrimination, and genocide will never repeat again.
