Haggadah and the Manuscript Collection of Gazi Husrev-bey’s Library entered the UNESCO’S Memory of the World Register!

The Sarajevo Haggadah and the Manuscript Collection of Gazi Husrev-bey’s library entered the World Memory Register, which is dedicated to the World Cultural Heritage, at the General Assembly of UNESCO in Paris. Thus, BiH got the first two entered goods in that register, which opened the door for new nominees from the sector of movable goods, as confirmed by the Head of the UNESCO Office in BiH, Sinisa Sesum.

The Memory of the World Register was established back in 1997 with the aim to preserve the documentary heritage of a great significance. A total of 348 items were entered into the Register so far, and they include documents, manuscripts and library, museum and archival material or collections.

Sesum noted that, unlike Haggadah, the Collection of Manuscripts of the Gazi Husrev-bey’s library was conditionally entered in that register, due to the need for some minor amendments.

He already emphasized the great importance of the Memory of the World Register, with his estimation that an emphasis has been put on the movable cultural heritage, since the focus has always been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which is focused on immobile cultural and historical heritage.

“BiH has a lot of movable goods, and this is one of the ways for their promotion. Those goods are well preserved in different places and in BiH institutions. It is very important to say that this is the beginning of the promotion of movable cultural goods in BiH because we have a lot to show, and we think that entering of these first two things in the register will be the initial capsule that will motivate others to promote all those values that BiH has in its possession,” stated Sesum.
