A group of 55 students and teachers from secondary schools in Sarajevo Canton joined today the “March of Peace”, a foot march that has been held for the past twenty years with the aim of honoring the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.

It is planned that in the period until July 10, they will walk the road from Nezuk to the Potočari Memorial Center in a length of about 100 kilometers and in this way make their contribution to the memory of the victims of genocide and the promotion of peace and the culture of memory.

The project was initiated by the Ministry of Education of Sarajevo Canton and the Institute for Development of Pre-University Education of Sarajevo Canton, and supported by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Policy.

The Minister of Education of Sarajevo Canton, Naida Hota-Muminović, emphasized the importance of this project, which was organized institutionally for the first time.

According to her, the goal is to gather students, teachers and principals of high schools in Sarajevo Canton to pay tribute to the victims together and encourage dialogue about the importance of peace, tolerance and coexistence.

“This is an important step in building and nurturing a culture of memory, and that systematically, through the education system. We remember the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica and raise new generations to remember and to use their moral strength to promote peace, memory and solidarity here and in the world,” said Hota-Muminović.

In the next three days, various activities of an educational nature are planned in order to explain to the participants the historical context of the events in Srebrenica and encourage a dialogue on reconciliation and building a future without conflict.

With the coordinating role of the Institute and numerous donors, the Ministry provided all the necessary resources – food, water, camping equipment, etc.

“Also, we have prepared special instructions that describe in detail the steps that need to be taken in order for the march to take place without difficulties. The expected standards of behavior are described and recommendations are given that can be of great help to both students and teachers participating in the Peace March, as well as parents. and followers,” said Hota-Muminović, BHRT writes.
