Politically, Bosnia and Herzegovina must join the European Union and be a member of NATO, it was announced today at the meeting of the Minister of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sifet Podzic and the representative in the German Bundestag Adis Ahmetovic held in Sarajevo.

Podzic stated that he discussed several very important topics with Ahmetovic, including cooperation between the defense ministries of the two countries.

“Our ministries have good cooperation. The Ministry of Defense of Germany helps the Ministry of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina a lot through various forms of cooperation,” Podzic said at the press conference.

During the meeting, they also discussed the results of the NATO summit that was held two weeks ago in Madrid, Spain, especially when it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“You know that NATO has prepared a package of support for Bosnia and Herzegovina. We also talked about what I expect from the German Ministry of Defense today,” Podzic said, noting that he also exchanged opinions with Ahmetovic on the issue of the status of EUFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and added:

“You know that the Bundestag made a decision that 50 German soldiers will join the EUFOR mission these days. I thanked that this was decided in the Bundestag. We also talked about if a situation were to arise in November that one of the countries that are permanent members of the United Nations would invest veto, in what way would that mission be extended. Thank you for all the help provided for Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the Ministry of Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

Ahmetovic said that Germany strongly supports Bosnia and Herzegovina on its way to the European Union.

“It is clear that Germany and the EU stand behind Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany supports BiH on its way to the EU, but Bosnia and Herzegovina has a task to complete 14 priorities, and the parliament in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the government must do that. I hope that there are many pro-European parties that are working on it,” Ahmetovic said.
