mosqueThe month of Ramadan begins when new moon appears on the sky. According to calculations, the new moon will be visible in the Balkans, BiH, tonight, with the calling for Maghrib prayers, which will mark the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

Praying of the first Tarawih prayer in all mosques will take place tonight, and the first suhur (meal with which the fasting begins) and the first day of fasting (1437/2016) is on Monday, the 6th of June. Month of Ramadan (1437/2016) has 29 days and the first day of Eid el Fitr is on the 5th of July.

Ramadan is the most special month of the year. The extraordinary night of Laylat al-Qadr, in which started revelation of the holy Qur’an, is in Ramadan as well as the night of Laylat al-Badr, a historical event that turned the history of Islam.

In the holy Qur’an is stated: “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous!” (Surat Al-Baqarah, verse 183)

Fasting means abstaining from food and drink, but also from bad speech, bad deeds, bad thoughts, from dawn (suhur) by the evening (iftar). The Qur’an strongly emphasizes the spiritual, moral, social and health dimensions of fasting. Fasting is obligatory for all adult, physically and mentally healthy Muslim men and women.

In holy Qur’an is strongly emphasized: “So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days.” (Surat Al-Baqarah, verse 185)

Ramadan is a month of special worships, prayers, repentance, forgiveness, spiritual purification and elevation, intensive interpersonal encounter, and besides fasting and Tarawih prayers, Muslims in BiH also recite the Qur’an, listen to muqabala (reciting Qur’an in mosques) with understanding of the Qur’an, and organize joint iftar dinners and suhurs.

Muhamed p.b.u.h. said: „Three men whose dua is never rejected (by Allah) are: the fasting person until he breaks his fast (in another narration, when he breaks fast), the just ruler and the one who is oppressed.”
