12952768_1147261501991471_1249119951_oSince 1996 until today, 70.220 people waived the BiH citizenship, confirmed the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH.

During the past year, 3.528 persons renounced the citizenship, while the largest number of persons waived their citizenship in the period between 2002 and 2007 – 32.310 persons.

The Ministry states that during the process of waiving the citizenship, the parties are not obliged to state any other reasons except the fact that they already possess or have been granted the acquisition of citizenship of another country.

“In informal conversations, the most frequently stated real reasons are the right to own property, facilitated traveling, facilitated studying abroad, more secure employment status and the like,” the Ministry stated, explaining that the citizenship was most often waived in favor of acquiring the citizenship of Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro. “In the meantime, Denmark passed a new law according to which the waiving of one’s citizenship is not requested”.

In order to waive citizenship, one must pay a tax for waiving the country amounting to 800 Bam, while the tax for the states of the former Yugoslavia amounts to 200 BAM. If the process is being conducted through the diplomatic-consular network of BiH abroad, consular tax must be paid as well.

BiH has an agreement on dual citizenship with Sweden, Serbia and Croatia.
