How much of BiH GDP goes to Research and Development?

With an investment of 0.19 percent of GDP in research and development in 2021, Bosnia and Herzegovina was far below the average of 27 EU countries, which is 2.27 percent.

Out of all 27 EU members, Romania allocates the least, 0.48 percent of its GDP, and Sweden allocates the most, 3.35 percent of its GDP, announced the BiH Statistics Agency in the publication “Bosnia and Herzegovina in numbers 2022”.

A total of 74,513,000 BAM has been allocated for research and development in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2021. The highest amount of funds was spent in the higher education sector 89.2 percent, followed by the business sector 7.0 percent, the state sector 2.4 percent and the non-profit sector 1.4 percent.

Looking at sectors, the highest allocations (expenditures) for research and development were in the higher education sector (57.7 percent or 43,007,000 BAM), followed by the business sector (37.4 percent or 27,875,000 thousand BAM) and the state sector (4, 9 percent or 3,631,000 BAM), while no investments in research and development were recorded in the non-profit sector.

There were 2,492 full-time and part-time employees in research and development jobs in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2021, of which 1,286 were women (51.6 percent).
