High Representative Christian Schmidt visited Bihać, where he met with cantonal and city authorities, representatives of NGOs, staff and students at the Bihać Gymnasium, and visited facilities of the Meggle dairy company. During the meetings, the High Representative discussed issues of importance to the Una-Sana Canton and the City of Bihać, focusing on projects and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During his meetings with cantonal and city authorities, the High Representative agreed with his counterparts that this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina deserves focused attention in addressing key issues and driving improvements that matter to citizens, the economy, and tourism. He also praised the efforts of all institutions at the city and cantonal levels in contributing toward this goal.

At the Bihać Gymnasium, staff, students, and representatives of NGOs expressed deep concern about the growing trend of emigration, particularly among the youth and the most productive members of society. In Una-Sana Canton, this issue is especially troubling due to the region’s geographic location and its proximity to countries offering more opportunities and better prospects. “I am here in Bihać today to listen to the views of the people living in Bihać and Una-Sana Canton on how this situation can be changed,” said High Representative Christian Schmidt. “I was impressed by the comprehensive reflections and proposals of the students. You are the generation of the future. Take responsibility and demand from the grey-haired generation commitment for your future here in Bihać and BiH! EU is your future. Una-Sana canton and BiH will ever remain your homeland.”

Concluding his visit, the High Representative emphasized the great potential of Una-Sana Canton, from its intelligent and hardworking people to its stunning natural beauty. “I am confident that, with your efforts and support from both the Federation and the state level, this region can soon become a much better place to live – a place where young people will choose to stay and build a future together.”
