IAEA: Parts of Iran’s Natanz Uranium enrichment Facility destroyed

Parts of Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility, which Israel attacked in the early hours of Friday morning, have been destroyed, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The site hit is an above-ground section of the Natanz pilot fuel enrichment facility, where uranium enriched to 60 percent is produced, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told the United Nations Security Council in New York on Friday.

Experts have repeatedly criticized the claim that such a level of enrichment is not needed for civilian purposes. Nuclear weapons require a purity level of about 90 percent.

The Iranian government has long said it is developing nuclear technology only for civilian purposes – something Israel says is not true.

Grossi warned that nuclear facilities must not be attacked under any circumstances and that such attacks could have serious radiation consequences.
