Our Immigrants in Norway can keep the Citizenship of BiH under certain Conditions

Due to the restrictive legal provisions on dual citizenship in the Kingdom of Norway, a large number of citizens of BiH in that country are demanding annulment of the citizenship of BiH in order to obtain the citizenship of Norway.

The Ambassador of BiH in Norway, Nedim Makarevic, noted that he receives requests for annulment of the citizenship of BiH on a daily basis.

“I would gladly not sign them, but I have to. Namely, the Norwegian Law on Citizenship from 2005 stipulates that a person seeking Norwegian citizenship has to renounce early citizenship,” noted Ambassador Makarevic.

However, he also noted the fact that the same law allows dual citizenship in case of “particularly strong reasons”.

“There are more reasons for providing the possibility of dual citizenship, but not all of them are relevant for the citizens of BiH. Only two of them are relevant for our citizens , and one of them is that if the annulment of their previous citizenship costs more than 4 % of the applicant’s income. This reason is very current for students and other citizens with low income,” stated Ambassador Makarevic.

Another reason for granting dual citizenship is that if annulment of previous citizenship leads to losing property, inheritance, and other rights. This is a very current reason for the majority of citizens of BiH in Norway because they usually have some real estate or heritage in their homeland and they will lose it because our laws are quite restrictive when it comes to the right of strangers to possess their own real estate on the territory of BiH,” stated Makarevic.

A person requesting Norwegian citizenship must call upon the reason for which he considers as appropriate for retaining its basic citizenship through the appeal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway (UDI).

“The appeal must include the reason and why it is valid for that person. To be exact, every appeal must be written specifically for that person. In order to increase the chance of adoption, it is highly recommended to also submit documents from BiH, which confirm the allegations stated in the appeal,” concluded Ambassador Nedim Makarevic.
