The Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced that it continuously monitors the epidemiological situation regarding African swine fever and, accordingly, bans the import of pigs and certain pig products into Bosnia and Herzegovina from countries and regions where this disease is present.

The announcement states that the epidemiological situation is continuously monitored in cooperation with all institutions that are involved in the implementation of prescribed control measures, all with the aim of suppressing and early detection of the disease.

All neighboring countries, as well as the World Organization for Animal Health and the European Commission, have been informed about the occurrence of the disease, the Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced.

The Office reminds that the first case of African swine fever in Bosnia and Herzegovina was confirmed on June 22 in Bijeljina, and that this is the first case of this disease ever recorded in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

African swine fever is a viral disease that affects only domestic and wild pigs and is not dangerous for humans or other animals. Pig mortality from this disease can be up to 100 percent, and it represents a serious risk for the pig farming sector, the wild boar population and the environment.

The statement notes that a vaccine against African swine fever has not been developed, and that there is no other way to eradicate it, other than the implementation of strict control measures, including the killing of domestic pigs on infected farms.
