Vijecnica (2)The Austro-Hungarian period in the history of Sarajevo is characterized as a period of industrialization, development, adaptation to western culture and various social changes. The three most importanat, most obvious and biggest changes in Sarajevo which happened during Austro-Hungarian rule are the changes in the political structure of the city, the architectural style, as well as changes in the education system.

 

List of important buildings built in this period in Sarajevo:

Town Hall

Sacred Heart Cathedral

Market

Officers casino (now the Chamber of the Armed Forces)

Sebilj

The National Museum

Ashkenazi Synagogue (now the only active synagogue in Sarajevo)

Evangelical Church (now the Academy of Fine Arts)

The first Gymnasium

Shariah School (now the Faculty of Islamic Studies)

Provincial Hospital (now the Clinical Center Kosevo)

Church of St. Cyril and Methodius

Social Centre (now the National Theatre)

Cinema “Apollo”

Hotel “Europe”

Church of the Holy Trinity
