12834860_1119422898108665_1243701472_nClimate changes are definitely affecting Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. Increasingly warm summers resulted in possibility of growing tropical fruits in BiH. This is evidenced by an example from Kakanj. Dževad Hamzić from the settlement Povezice grows bananas in his yard.

“The banana tree in my yard has been growing for eight years now. It gives fruit, but unfortunately, due to short summers, the fruits do not ripe completely. If summers in BiH lasted until December, the banana fruits would ripe, too,” said Hamzić, adding that bananas might thrive in BiH if they were grown in greenhouses, where the temperatures can be maintained on a higher level even after the summer is over.

“Nevertheless, even without ripe fruits, the banana tree is a nice decoration in the yard,” said Hamzić.

Banana leaves fall off during the winter and Hamzić protects the tree with foil and sawdust coating. The tree blossoms in spring again, with leaves growing up to five meters in length.
