Through negotiations with its main enemy, the United States (U.S.), this weekend Iran is giving a “sincere opportunity,” announced the spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X on Friday.
U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced on Monday that Washington and Tehran are ready to begin direct negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program on Saturday in Oman, warning that the Islamic Republic would be in “great danger” if the negotiations fail.
The announcement was confusing because Iranian authorities said the talks would be indirect, with Oman as a mediator.
Iran, which previously said it would not be forced into negotiations, said that the U.S. should value this decision despite the fact that their relationship is “dominated by chaos.”
“This Saturday we intend to assess the intention and willingness of the other side,” added spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
Iranian state media reported that the talks will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. President’s envoy Steve Witkoff, with the mediation of Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al Busaidi.
