Iranian Media: ‘Pray for the President’

One of the helicopters from the group carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made a rough landing and rescue teams are on their way to the scene, Iran’s interior minister said on Sunday.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the helicopter was carrying Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and local officials.

Following the report, Iran’s Fars news agency called on Iranians to pray for Raisi.

Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi told state television that authorities are awaiting further details.

The 63-year-old Raisi was elected president in a second attempt in 2021, and since taking office, he has tightened riot laws, overseen a bloody crackdown on anti-government protests and taken a hard line in negotiations with world powers over Iran’s nuclear program.

Many see his moves as an attempt to present himself as a good candidate to succeed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
