Iranian Revolutionary Guard calls on Supreme Leader to revoke Fatwa banning nuclear Weapons

According to Israeli media reports, several commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have called on Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to revoke the fatwa banning nuclear weapons due to threats from the West.

During the adoption of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) convention in 2005, an official statement was issued regarding the fatwa signed by Ali Khamenei, stating that Islamic teachings prohibit nuclear weapons.

According to sources in Israeli and United States (U.S.) media, some commanders of the IRGC have submitted a request to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to lift the fatwa prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons.

“The Leader has banned negotiations with the U.S. and the development of nuclear weapons, which seems to be the only means of survival, and he is leading the regime toward collapse,” said an unnamed official.

Unnamed officials from the IRGC stress that the pressure to develop nuclear weapons is growing stronger by the day.

“For some time now, we have been just a few button presses away from creating a nuclear weapon, but the pressures and justifications for having one are greater than ever,” added the official.

The criticisms from unnamed officials were also confirmed by Supreme Leader’s adviser Kamal Kharazi in his 2024 statement, emphasizing that the pace of nuclear weapons development will depend on the level of threats Iran faces.

“We have no decision to make a nuclear bomb, but if Iran’s survival is threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine,” said Kamal Kharazi, Klix.ba writes.
