On 9 April 2026, the Commander of EUFOR, Major General Maurizio Fronda, attended an event in Mostar marking the International Day for Mine Awareness.

The event, organised in cooperation with the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre (BHMAC), the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and local authorities, brought together key institutional representatives, international partners, and organisations engaged in humanitarian demining. Among the distinguished attendees were the Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Zukan Helez, the Deputy Minister of Defence, Mr. Slaven Galić, the Director of BHMAC, Mr. Enis Horozović, the Mayor of Mostar, Mr. Mario Kordić, the European Union Political Advisor in BiH, Mr. Fermin Cordova, as well as senior officers and generals of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The commemoration underscored the persistent threat posed by mines and explosive remnants of war, highlighting the critical importance of sustained and coordinated mine action efforts across the country. Presentations and discussions focused on ongoing demining operations, risk education, and strengthening cooperation among all stakeholders.

On this occasion, Major General Fronda emphasised the outstanding contribution of the Demining Battalion of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, stating:

“The work of the Demining Battalion is nothing short of exceptional. Their professionalism, expertise, and unwavering dedication are saving lives every day. They are not only clearing land — they are restoring safety and building the foundation for a secure future.”

EUFOR’s participation in this event reflects its firm and enduring commitment, under Operation Althea, to contributing to a safe and secure environment. By supporting efforts to address legacy security challenges such as mine contamination, EUFOR continues to work closely with domestic and international partners to enhance stability, protect communities, and support lasting peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
