Israel said it had “dismantled” Hamas’s military leadership in northern Gaza as its war against the Palestinian group entered its fourth month on Sunday, with fears growing that the conflict could spread to neighboring Lebanon.
Six people were killed early Sunday during an Israeli raid in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry said, and witnesses reported that Israel also carried out airstrikes in Gaza’s southern capital Khan Yunis.
The Israeli military said late Saturday that it had “completed the dismantling of Hamas’ military framework in the northern Gaza Strip” and that its forces would now focus on the central and southern areas of the territory.
The prospect of a wider regional war emerged as army spokesman Daniel Hagari warned that Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah was “dragging Lebanon into an unnecessary war”.
The group fired more than 60 rockets at an Israeli military base on Saturday in response to the killing this week of the deputy leader of Hamas in Beirut, AA writes.
