Italy, Albania, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a deal on Wednesday worth at least one billion euros to construct an underwater interconnection for renewable energy across the Adriatic Sea.

“We strongly believe in this project that involves our three governments, as well as our private sectors and network operators,” stated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, announcing the agreement at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi.

The three-way partnership, aimed at producing green energy in Albania and exporting it to Italy via underwater cables, will include the Italian network operator Terna and the UAE’s National Energy Company, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced.

He added that the infrastructure will connect the Albanian port of Vlore with the southern Italian region of Puglia, the narrowest point between the two countries, and is expected to be operational within three years at most.
