Japan has issued the highest-level “special warning” for a major storm, waves and high tide on the main island of Kyushu, with authorities urging 56,000 people to evacuate.

“Typhoon Shanshan is expected to approach Kyushu with extremely strong strength by tomorrow and may make landfall,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said.

He added that wind, waves and storm surges are expected that many people have never experienced before, AFP reported.

The approaching storm is currently being tracked with 252km/h winds and has already brought heavy rain.

Meteorologists forecast that 1,100 millimeters of rain will fall in southern Kyushu in the next 48 hours, which is half the annual average for the area.
