In celebration of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito’s 65th birthday, the Ambassador of Japan to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Toshihiro AIKI, hosted a formal reception in Sarajevo, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with BiH.

During his speech, Ambassador AIKI reflected on Japan’s imperial history, noting that Emperor Jimmu, according to legend, ascended the throne 2,682 years ago, establishing an unbroken imperial lineage. His Majesty Emperor Naruhito assumed the throne in 2019, becoming Japan’s 126th Emperor.

The Ambassador emphasized that Japan and BiH are strong partners, sharing fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. He highlighted BiH’s key role in European stability, particularly in the Western Balkans, and reiterated Japan’s support for BiH’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a leading member of the Peace Implementation Council.

“In today’s global landscape, the security of Europe, East Asia, and the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan, is closely interconnected. The need to uphold and strengthen the international order based on the rule of law continues to grow,” Ambassador AIKI stated.

Japan’s Continued Support for BiH

Japan has long been a steadfast partner in BiH’s development, having provided approximately $500 million in aid across various sectors, including post-war reconstruction, SME development, disaster prevention, healthcare, and education. The Ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting BiH’s EU integration, pledging to continue providing tailored assistance for socio-economic reforms.

“Japan welcomes BiH’s efforts toward EU integration and will continue to offer assistance through various programs aimed at strengthening its economic and institutional development,” he added.

Bilateral Relations and Economic Cooperation

Japan and BiH have seen steady growth in their diplomatic and economic relations. Ten Japanese companies currently operate in BiH, including a factory in Konjic that has created over 300 jobs. The Ambassador also noted the increasing interest in Japanese culture, with a growing number of students learning the Japanese language, as well as the popularity of judo and karate in BiH.

In recent years, diplomatic engagement has intensified, with high-level visits between officials. The former Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs KAMIKAWA Yoko visited BiH last year, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to BiH’s development. A previous visit by Japan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs  MOTEGI Toshimitsu in 2021 further underscored the importance Japan places on its partnership with BiH.

Looking Ahead: 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations

Ambassador Aiki expressed his honor in working to strengthen Japan–BiH relations, recognizing BiH as a nation rich in culture, natural beauty, and economic potential. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, a milestone that Japan intends to celebrate by further enhancing bilateral cooperation and fostering peace and prosperity in the region.

“The Embassy of Japan will continue working to strengthen diplomatic ties and promote a peaceful and prosperous future for both countries,” the Ambassador concluded.
