Stoltenberg: NATO will agree on new military Aid to Ukraine today, but also increase Support for BiH

”NATO leaders will agree on the deployment of four new Alliance battle groups in Eastern Europe – in Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania, ” Jens Stoltenberg emphasized.

The NATO Secretary–General told that it represents a great long-term increase in the presence of the military alliance in the region, doubling the existing number of combat groups.

Yesterday, the United States (U.S.) President Joe Biden has left Washington and is on his way to the Belgian capital, where he will attend a meeting with NATO allies today to discuss a response to the Russian invasion.

Stoltenberg said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is brutal and that it is terrible to watch human suffering.

“We are determined to do everything we can to support Ukraine,” Stoltenberg noted.

He added that NATO has a “responsibility” to ensure that the war does not escalate outside Ukraine, as this would cause even more deaths and destruction.

“I also expect that we will agree to strengthen tailored support for other partners threatened by Russian pressure, including Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH),” he mentioned.

NATO leaders, Stoltenberg stressed, are preparing to send equipment to Ukraine for use in defense against chemical and nuclear weapons.

Stoltenberg said that today‘s summit is expected to agree to provide “additional support” to Ukraine, including equipment for “protection from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats”, as well as assistance in cyber security.

As he pointed out, NATO members are facing a fundamentally changed security environment in which authoritarian governments are willing to use force.
