Jose Mourinho Heavily Sanctioned in Turkey for Controversial Comment on Galatasaray Players

The Turkish Football Federation severely punished Jose Mourinho after the Istanbul derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, which ended goalless (0:0) on Monday.

Two days ago, the Turkish Football Federation handed Mourinho a punishment of as many as four matches of being banned from managing the team from the bench, and on top of that, the legendary Portuguese coach also has to pay a fine of as much as 40.000 euros!

As they explained, the punishment relates to inflammatory comments directed at the refereeing team at the post-match press conference, where he said the match was better because Turkish referees were not officiating. In addition, he was punished for comments made during the match that were deemed racist.

Mourinho said that Galatasaray players on the bench were “jumping like monkeys,” and this was interpreted as a racist insult, although the legendary Didier Drogba, a former Galatasaray striker, also came to the defense of the “Special One”.

After Galatasaray’s accusations, which included filing official complaints to UEFA and FIFA, Fenerbahce announced that they would initiate legal proceedings for defamation.

In addition to Drogba, Mourinho was also supported by Michael Essien, who clearly stated that the Portuguese coach is not a racist.
