“The most important thing is that the case ended and that Karadzic was convicted of genocide, even though only for the genocide in Srebrenica and crimes against humanity,” said Vidovic adding that the Trial Chamber clearly did not see enough evidence of the genocide in other municipalities.
Vidovic pointed out that the judgment was of historical significance and that the Hague tribunal fulfilled its role by brinigng to justice one of the most responsible people for the genocide and crimes in Bosnia.
“The significance of the judgment will be seen only when the emotions subside and we realize its importance for future generations. Someone in the future wont commit crimes, because he’ll realize that punishment will come eventually” she adds.
In her opinion the years in prison are not the key element here, and it will certainly once again be discussed by the Appeals Chamber.
“Forty years is not a small penalty, but the important part here are the imposed qualifications” she concludes.
