EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that public support for Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide in Srebrenica, is not compatible with Serbia’s request to join the EU.
“There is no place for glorifying war criminals; that goes really, really strongly against European values and has no place, not in the EU member states, but not even among our candidates,” she said.
“We are following the situation very carefully… and we will see what will happen in the coming days, and we are also seeing the actions of the government,” added Kos.
“There is certainly a place for Serbia in the EU, but [the EU] requires not only the implementation of reforms. Strategic alliances or strategic orientation in the field of common security and foreign policy are becoming more and more important,” she said.
Mladić was the commander of the Army of Republika Srpska during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague sentenced him to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
