The Government of North Macedonia announced today that it has approved the Draft Law on declaring Lake Ohrid a natural monument.
According to that proposal, Lake Ohrid is declared a natural monument due to its geomorphological and hydrological characteristics, exceptional natural values as part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage and one of the most important centers of biological diversity refuges in the European and world frameworks.
By declaring it a natural monument, it is specified, the protection and preservation of the natural state of Lake Ohrid is enabled through the protection and preservation of habitats and species of national and European importance and the protection of other natural values.
It is also possible to prevent actions that can directly or indirectly cause damage to habitats and ecosystems, to create favorable conditions for the protection, preservation and improvement of biological and regional diversity, as well as sustainable use of natural resources in a way that does not threaten the survival of habitats and species.
The bill on the declaration of Lake Ohrid was approved yesterday at the fourth session of Talat Džaferi’s government, on the proposal of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning of North Macedonia, Beta news agency writes.
