Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at his annual press conference today that the West wants to be the ‘ruler of everyone’s destiny’.
The Russian foreign minister says this “worries” him because “times have changed drastically” in the past 30 to 35 years.
“Opposition to Western dictates has now been re-established, faced with new emerging economies and financial centers,” he says.
He adds that the current Western elites cannot overcome this inertia and are going downhill, trying to obstruct the path of their competitors everywhere.
He argues that the broad sanctions imposed by Washington on Russia are an American attempt to stop economic competition, Sky News reports.
The US and its allies have imposed several rounds of sanctions on the Russian state, companies and individuals in response to Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
He describes the politics behind the sanctions as a “soap opera”.
He notes the imminent return of Donald Trump, and says the Kremlin will “closely monitor” how he approaches further sanctions.
He says Trump has promised to make America great again, so “we should closely monitor President Trump’s methods to achieve those goals.”
