Not only is swimming in the rivers of the Sarajevo Canton not recommended, but it is forbidden as well, as stated from the Institute of Public Health of the Sarajevo Canton.

“Year after year, experts of the Institute test the quality and level of polution of the rivers within the Canton, and the results are getting worse every year“, said the hygiene specialist, Dr. Lejla Hatibović.

The tests were carried out in Miljacka, Zujevina, Bosna, Dobrinja, Željeznica and Mošćanica.

The analysis of samples taken of water resulted in a high rate of fresh fecal contamination. It is mostly a large amount of coliform bacteria identified as Escherichia coli and Enterococcus species, Lejla Hatibović pointed out.
