Leptospirosis Detected in Sarajevo: Health Officials Issue Warning

In recent days, 10 patients with symptoms suggestive of leptospirosis have been treated at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Clinical Center in Sarajevo.

The first cases were recorded in the Sarajevo municipality of Novi Grad, where citizens began to report to doctors with symptoms such as high fever, severe fatigue, and elevated inflammatory and liver parameters, according to media reports.

In order to prevent the spread of this infectious disease, spring deratization is currently being carried out in the municipalities of Novi Grad, Centar and Ilidža.

Controls have also been tightened over building managers, markets and public areas.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It is most often transmitted through contact with water, soil or food contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rodents.

People can become infected if the bacteria enter the body through damaged skin or mucous membranes – eyes, nose, mouth.

Symptoms of the disease include high fever, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, vomiting and, in more severe cases, liver and kidney damage and meningitis.

If not treated in time, leptospirosis can have serious health consequences and even death.
