The world population reached five billion in July 1987. Since then, the July 11 is marked as the World Day of Population, at the initiative of the Council of the UNDP.

At the global level, the number of male population slightly exceeds the number of female population (it is estimated that 102 men come to every 100 women in 2017). Children up to 15 years old make about 26 % of the world’s population, and the population older than 60 makes about 13 %. When it comes to Europe, 25 % of the population is older than 60 and it is expected that this category of the population will be increased to 35 % by the year of 2050. On the other hand, in Africa, which has the youngest population, this category is expected to grow from the current 5 % to 9 % by the year of 2050.

The number of live-born children in the world is around 141 million per year, and about 58 million people die every year. On average, the world population is increased for about two populations of BiH every month. The world’s population is growing at a rate of 1.1 % on an annual basis, and this rate is expected to decline in the upcoming period.

Estimated life expectancy at birth (2016) for the world population is 71.7 years (69.4 for men, and 74 for women). The lowest life expectancy is in Sierra Leone (51.8), Central African Republic (52.2), Chad (52.9), Nigeria (53.4) and the highest in Japan (83.8 years), Switzerland (83.3), Spain (83.1) and Singapore (83). Estimated life expectancy at birth for the population of BiH is 76.9 years (74.4 years for men and 79.4 years for women).

According to the medium variant of projection (the Population Division of UN), the world population is expected to reach 8.55 billion by the year of 2030 and 9.77 billion by 2050. It is expected for the population of Africa to increase by 101.2 % by 2050 and for the population of Europe to decrease by 3.6 %. While some countries expect to increase their population by double, for 51 countries and territories is expected to decrease their population by the year of 2050.
