‘Liquid Trees’: Special Algae produce clean Air in Belgrade

The capital of Serbia, Belgrade, which is often on the list of the most polluted in the world during the winter, received the second bio-photo reactor “Liquid 3”, i.e. “liquid tree“, whose goal is to reduce air pollution, reports Anadolu.

This “liquid tree” represents a new biotechnological solution for air purification and reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in urban areas.

Namely, the second purifier in the city was installed in Terazije at number 45, while the first “liquid tree” in Serbia was installed in Makedonska Street.

UNDP Serbia previously announced that “liquid tree” replaces two ten-year-old trees or 200 square meters of lawn.

The photo-bioreactor works because there are algae in the 600-liter aquarium that bind carbon dioxide and produce pure oxygen through photosynthesis in a direct process.

The system uses solar energy for lighting and in addition to purifying the air from CO2, it can be used as a bench, charger for mobile phones and night lighting.

“Liquid 3” was awarded as one of the 11 best innovative and climate-smart solutions within the project “Local development resistant to climate change”, which is implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, with the financial support of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF), they stated.
