French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday appointed Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator for Brexit, as the country’s new prime minister.
“The President of the Republic appointed Michel Barnier as Prime Minister. He tasked him with forming a unification government that will serve the country and the French people,” the Elysée Palace said in a statement.
Center-right politician Barnier is a former European commissioner and French foreign minister.
Barnier is the oldest prime minister in the history of modern France, and he was given the task of forming a “unification government in the service of the country”, announced the French presidency.
