Dmitry Medvedev, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, called Joe Biden a “mad” disgrace to the United States (U.S.) on Friday, stating that the U.S. president had no right to compare himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
On Thursday, Biden opened his State of the Union address by referencing Roosevelt’s 1941 speech to Congress, in which Roosevelt said the union faced an unprecedented turning point in history.
Biden also accused his Republican rival, Donald Trump, of kowtowing to Russia and, just over two weeks after calling Vladimir Putin a “crazy SOB,” he said he had a message for the Russian president regarding Ukraine: “We will not walk away.”
“While Roosevelt was an infirm man in a wheelchair, he raised the U.S. from the Depression; Biden, on the other hand, is a mad, mentally incapacitated individual who has decided to drag humanity into hell,” wrote Medvedev, a former president who now serves as the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia.
“Roosevelt, along with allies, including the USSR, fought for peace; yet, Biden actively and persistently tries to start World War III. Roosevelt fought against fascists, but Biden fought for them. He is a disgrace to the U.S.!” Medvedev wrote in English.
Medvedev, who presented himself as a liberal modernizer during his presidency from 2008 to 2012, now presents himself as an anti-Western Kremlin hawk. Diplomats claim that his views reflect the thinking at the highest levels of the Kremlin elite.
The war in Ukraine has caused a deep crisis in Russia’s relations with the West, and Biden angered Russian officials with his statement about the “crazy SOB.” Putin, with an ironic smile, said that this remark shows why the Kremlin considers Biden a preferable future president over Trump.
Biden made this remark in a sentence about global threats, including “that guy Putin and others,” the risk of nuclear conflict, and the existential threat to humanity from climate change.
Putin portrays the U.S. and its allies as a crumbling empire that wants to destroy Russia and steal its natural resources.
