The President of the “Mothers of Srebrenica” Association Hatidža Mehmedović considers the life imprisonment of Zdravko Tolimir, who is charged with genocide and other war crimes committed in Srebrenica and Žepa in 1995, brought today by the Appeals Chamber of the Hague Tribunal, a good message for the new generations.
“This is a reminder to future generations not to run for what their predecessors did; if there is no justice, it will not take long, and we will once again experience what happened to us”, said Mehmedović.
Still, she says, the victims can never be satisfied, but the hardest for them, as she pointed out, is the releasing of war criminals to freedom and assigning them to certain functions.
“If there was justice, they would all be punished by now. You cannot account five, ten, twenty people for the genocide”, she said.
The ICTY Appeals Chamber confirmed today the sentence of life imprisonment for Zdravko Tolimir, who is charged with genocide and other war crimes committed in Srebrenica and Žepa in 1995.
The Supreme Court ordered that the judgment be enforced immediately and that Tolimir remains in the custody of the Tribunal pending the finalization of arrangements for his transfer to the state where sentence will be served.
Tolimir, former Assistant Commander for Intelligence and Security of the Main Staff of the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS), was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in 1995 after the fall of Srebrenica and Žepa enclaves, in B&H.
