The Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Denis Becirovic, and member of the Presidency of BiH, Zeljko Komsic, met in New York with the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, a day before the vote on a resolution designating July 11th as the International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

This was their second joint meeting in just over a month. The meeting was also attended by BiH’s ambassador to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdzija, according to the Office of the Chairman of the Presidency of BiH Denis Becirovic.

Becirovic and Komsic thanked UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his ongoing support of actions and measures against genocide denial and hate speech in BiH.

Chairman Becirovic emphasized the importance of the UN General Assembly adopting the resolution today, stating that it would help preserve the UN’s credibility.

“This is an important civilizational step for truth and justice. The resolution holds historical significance because the international community is sending a clear message that it does not condone genocide and the ideology of genocide denial,” said Becirovic.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that it is crystal clear to the UN that genocide was committed in Srebrenica, as confirmed by the final judgments of the highest UN courts, and this cannot be disputed.

During the conversation, it was acknowledged that building a future of peace requires confronting the past. Genocide prevention was highlighted as a fundamental priority.

Becirovic expressed special respect for those who will support the Srebrenica resolution, emphasizing that its adoption will lead to genuine reconciliation and the establishment of lasting peace in BiH and the region, the statement said.
