floodsMemorandum and two agreements were signed at the headquarters of Government of the Federation of BiH in Sarajevo yesterday, which refer to cofinancing projects of repair of landslides and construction of houses for families who lost their homes in last-year’s floods.

Prime Minister of the Federation of BiH Nermin Nikšić and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in BiH Yuri Afanasiev signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the FBiH Government and UNDP.

Co-Financing Agreement between the Federation Ministry of Physical Planning, the Federation Fund for Flooded Areas and UNDP was signed by the Federation Minister of Physical Planning Desnica Radivojević, Director of the Federation Fund Jasmin Jaganjac and Resident Representative of UNDP Yuri Afanasiev, and the Federation Fund for Flooded Areas and UNDP also signed Co-Financing Agreement.

After last-year’s floods, said Afanasiev, the biggest problems were landslides and population which was displaced due to natural disaster.

”We found a solution for the biggest part of this problem and according to this Memorandum the UN will secure three million KM, whereas the Federation Fund will secure additional two million KM,” stated Afanasiev, adding they will work on 15 most serious landslides.

He said that the second problem refers to the population that cannot go back to their homes, and they assess there are around 700 of those families in BiH.

”We signed a Memorandum according to which the UN will secure one third of funds, the Federation Fund will secure two thirds, and local authorities will give their contribution by securing these families get land, necessary permits for construction and everything else that is needed in infrastructural sense,” said Afanasiev, emphasizing that agreement for the first group was signed today, that is, for 40 houses in the Federation of BiH.

He reminded they signed a similar agreement with Republika Srpska for 150 families two weeks ago.

”We expect the project will be completed by next winter,” said Afanasiev.

Deputy Prime Minister of FBiH and Minister of Physical Planning Radivojević and Director of the Federation Fund Jaganjac emphasized importance of these projects, which are implemented by joining funds to help people who lost their homes in floods and landslides.

They said that UNDP will conduct all procedures, which will secure transparency and efficiency in project implementation.
