Ambassador Johann Sattler, Head of the Delegation of the European Union and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, hosted today in Sarajevo the conference „Tourism – Economic Game Changer“, within which the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the revitalization of the Sarajevo-Pale cycling trail was organized. The Memorandum was signed by Mayor of Sarajevo Benjamina Karić, Mayor of East Sarajevo Ljubiša Ćosić, Head of Municipality Stari Grad Ibrahim Hadžibajrić, Head of Municipality Pale Boško Jugović and Head of Municipality Istočni Stari Grad Bojo Gašanović.

“It is a pleasure to host mayors and heads of municipalities who have jointly supported the development of tourism and the construction of a cycling trail that will connect both cities and people, but also be a real tourist attraction. I am happy that we have the opportunity to provide financial support for this dream to become a reality already next year,” said Ambassador Johann Sattler.

“This is great news for cycling enthusiasts, for our tourism, for the promotion of healthy living and the living environment. Apart from the sports component that connects people, this is a significant infrastructural and tourist project. We are grateful to the EU in BiH and Ambassador Sattler for the initiative and support,” emphasized the Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić.

“It is important that the cities of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo continue their successful cooperation, which has been proven by the implementation of a number of projects. The construction of the cycling path will not only additionally connect these two cities and its inhabitants, but it will certainly be something that tourists will love,” said Ljubiša Ćosić, the Mayor of East Sarajevo.

The European Union continuously supports the development of tourism and the improvement of the tourism offer of BiH. Together with the Government of the Republic of Germany, the EU has so far allocated EUR 1.6 million through the EU4Business programme, while an additional EUR 1.2 million will soon be invested through the EU4BusinessRecovery to help tourism recover from the effects of COVID-19.
