Memorial for the Victims of the Live Pyre in Višegrad revealed

Višegrad avaz.baMemorial for 57 locals who were taken from Koritnik near Višegrad on June 14, 1992 and then burned alive in the house of Adem Omeragić in Pionirska Street was revealed yesterday in this village near Višegrad.

This village near Višegrad is entirely abandoned today. An eerie and deserted place in which there is almost no one to return because majority of locals disappeared in the flame of the live pyre on the fatal June 1992, after they were taken from Koritnik.

Entire family of Ramo Kurspahić was killed. While he listed the family members whom he lost, immeasurable pain is reflected on his face, and there is no relief. Losing his dearest ones marked his life forever.

“I lost my father, my mother, brother, sister in law, three children of my brother. I never found anyone of them, except my brother,” Ramo said.

Hajra Ajanović survived. She managed to save herself from the flame of the live pyre. Images of terror that she has been through are still haunting her.

“I have no idea how I survived. I was laying for three days in the sewer with my child and I somehow got away. God wanted me to survive and today I live with my family. I returned here to live,” Hajra said.

In memory of all victims of the Pionirska Street, surviving locals of Koritnik yesterday revealed the memorial with names of the killed ones. That is now the only place where they can pay tribute to the victims, because even 24 years after the crime their remains have not been found.

Bakira Hasečić, President of the Association “Woman victim of the war”, hopes that authorities will find out where the remains of the killed people of Višegrad are so that their families can bury them with dignity.

Milan Lukić was sentenced to life for this and other crimes committed at the territory of Višegrad.
