Mexico Sues Google Over ‘Gulf Of Mexico’ Name Change

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday that her government has filed a lawsuit against Google over the change of the name “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of the Americas” on U.S.-based maps.

At a press conference at the National Palace in Mexico City, Sheinbaum said the government had previously warned Google about the problem, but that the warnings had not borne fruit.

“Google has already been sued. A preliminary court decision has been issued and we are currently awaiting the final outcome,” she said.

Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico has nothing against using the name “Gulf of the Americas” for the part of the gulf that lies along the U.S. coast.

“However, Google cannot call the entire gulf that name. This is an international issue. Our request is that Google use the name ‘Gulf of the Americas’ exclusively for areas that belong to U.S. territory, and that the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ be retained for the parts that border Mexico and Cuba,” she said.

She added that the topic was not raised in phone conversations with US President Donald Trump.

Trump had earlier signed an executive order on January 20th ordering the renaming of the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the Americas”.

Google announced on February 11th that the change had been officially implemented on its mapping platform, AA writes.
