The security situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently satisfactory, but the citizens are rightfully upset after several unpleasant events, Federal Minister of the Interior Ramo Isak said in an interview for BHRT.
Isak pointed out that police agencies at all levels are involved in monitoring the security situation and that cooperation between the Federal Police Administration, cantonal police administrations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Srpska and state agencies is at a high level.
Good cooperation of police agencies
Speaking about the recent shootings in East Sarajevo and the fact that a vehicle suspected of being used in one of the shootings was found in the Vogošće area, Isak emphasized the importance of mutual cooperation between police agencies.
“We are all one security apparatus with the same goal: the safety of citizens throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Isak.
According to him, the directors of police agencies and cantonal police commissioners exchange information every day and cooperate in cases that require joint action.
The Federal Police is getting new capacities
Isak also spoke about the strengthening of the technical capacities of the Federal Police Administration, in particular singling out helicopter capacities.
He stated that the FUP helicopter, which has been out of service for a long time, needs to be serviced and put back into operation. According to him, funds have already been secured for this.
At the same time, the MUP of Sarajevo Canton made its new helicopter available not only to the Federation, but to all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“I want all 10 cantons to have at least one helicopter each, and the Federal Police Administration at least two or three,” said Isak.
Such capacities, as he stated, could be used in police actions, but also in cases of fire, rescue, transport of patients and other emergency situations.
“The best resource is people”
Isak singled out employees as a key advantage of the Federal Police Administration.
“The Federal Police Administration is currently one of the best, best police forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he said.
He added that in the previous period, new material and technical means were provided, including vehicles, equipment, weapons and uniforms.
He singled out the Special Unit of the FUP, which will be located in the complex in Semizovac, where works on the buildings are currently being carried out.
Greater capacity to fight cybercrime
According to Isak, one of the priorities is to strengthen the capacity to fight against modern forms of crime.
The cybercrime department is being raised to a higher level, while police structures continue to work on cases of threats, false reports of bombs and other crimes, as well as on the suppression of drug trafficking.
Isak pointed out that FUP police officers work continuously and that they have the support of cantonal police administrations in their actions.
“Thanks to that cooperation, we have the results we have,” he said.
Prosecutor’s offices and courts must better monitor the work of the police
When asked what should be improved in the security system of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Isak specifically pointed to the attitude of judicial institutions towards the work of the police.
He praised prosecutors and judges who, as he said, perform their work professionally, but believes that judicial institutions should more closely monitor the work of police officers who are the first to go to the field and conduct investigations.
“Prosecution offices and courts must do their work in a better, more professional manner”, said Isak, assessing that such an approach would contribute to the reduction of crime in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
