Minister Pozder and Danish Ambassador Møller Agree on Closer Cooperation in Environment, Sustainable Cities and Tourism

Federal Minister of Environment and Tourism Nasiha Pozder met today at the headquarters of the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to BiH, Åge Sandal Møller. The talks focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in environmental protection, sustainable urban development, tourism, and public diplomacy.

A key initiative highlighted during the meeting was the potential engagement of Danish experts and university professors to deliver Masterclass lectures in Sarajevo on sustainable cities and urban transformation. Denmark, currently holding the presidency of the European Union, is recognized for its expertise in smart city planning and environmental protection. The well-integrated BiH diaspora in Denmark was also identified as a strong bridge for deepening cooperation.

Minister Pozder emphasized that Sarajevo is actively advancing its transformation into a more livable city, citing its inclusion in the EU-funded mission “100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030”, its participation in the Interreg Euro-MED program, and the Sarajevo Urban Transformation Project. She underlined the importance of natural solutions, citizen engagement, and climate adaptation to strengthen sustainable tourism and link Sarajevo with the European Zero Net Cities network.

Both sides agreed that Denmark’s State of Green organization—bringing together more than 600 companies, institutions, and researchers in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the circular economy—represents a model of good practice that could be applied in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The meeting also addressed the issue of reducing air pollution, an area where Denmark could provide valuable expertise. Ambassador Møller stressed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s untapped tourism potential, highlighting the importance of improved connectivity through direct flights, particularly the Copenhagen–Sarajevo route. He added that implementation of the Reform Agenda would open access to substantial funding from the EU Growth Plan, enabling significant local projects in energy efficiency.

Minister Pozder noted that the Federation is preparing a new Federal Waste Management Plan and drafting a new Law on Waste Management. She also underscored the importance of declaring new protected areas, including Prenj, Livno, Ljubuški, and Mostar, while reaffirming that air quality and energy efficiency remain top ministry priorities.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to building closer cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Denmark, with a focus on environmental protection, sustainable city development, and unlocking the country’s tourism potential through the use of European funds and partnerships with relevant institutions.
