More than 115,000 Syrians have returned home since the fall of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

The repatriation has been ongoing since December 8, with Syrians returning from Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, Anadolu reported.

The UNHCR on Thursday cited data from host countries, interactions with immigration authorities in Syria and border controls by the agency and its partners.

Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups seized the capital Damascus on December 8, ending the rule of the Baath Party, which had been in power since 1963.

The change came after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters quickly seized key cities in an offensive that lasted less than two weeks.
