Residents and police in Paiporta, a suburb of Valencia, have spent hours searching through a flooded area of wrecked vehicles after devastating floods hit Spain’s eastern coast last year.

It is estimated that more than 120,000 cars were destroyed in the catastrophic floods at the end of October last year.

In the eastern and southern parts of Spain, where more than 300 liters of rain per square meter were recorded, the floods caused enormous damage. Agricultural fields were flooded, vehicles were damaged, numerous roads and bridges collapsed, and there were serious problems with land and rail transport.

The floods were caused by a storm system that lingered over Spain for more than seven days, causing flooding in other areas such as Cadiz, Barcelona and Girona. According to local authorities, more than 220 people died in accidents caused by the floods.
