The process of re-exhumation of already identified and buried remains of victims of the Srebrenica genocide from July 1995 is currently in progress in the Memorial Centre “Potočari.”
Spokeswoman of the Missing Persons Institute in B&H, Lejla Čengić, said that the re-exhumation is done for re-association, or for adding later found identified body parts.
It is planned to perform re-exhumation of 109 victims that later found parts of the skeleton will be added.
Čengić stated that the process of re-exhumation should last until the end of this month, or until the re-association of the remains of 109 victims is done.
Re-exhumation is attended by the representatives of the Prosecutor’s Office and the International Commission on Missing Persons, members of PS Srebrenica, forensic experts, representatives of the Missing Persons Institute of B&H as well as the family members of victims.
“Mortal remains of the most of the victims that are buried in Potočari are incomplete and their families are aware of the fact that, if found later on, parts of the skeleton will be added to already buried remains,” said Čengić.
She added that the victims killed in July 1995 in Srebrenica area are found mainly in the secondary, relocated mass graves.
“The perpetrators, in order to cover up the crimes of mass murder of the Bosniak population from Srebrenica, Bratunac, Vlasenica, Zvornik and other places in the area around Srebrenica, have displaced graves from the primary locations to other distant and hidden locations, in order for the crime not to be proved, and the victims never to be found, “stated Čengić.
