The list of the most visited cities in the world for 2024, compiled by Euromonitor International, has been published, and this year, Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, claimed the top spot.

Bangkok recorded an impressive 32.4 million international arrivals, marking a significant increase (37%) compared to the previous year. This puts Bangkok roughly 12 million arrivals ahead of Istanbul, which in 2023 registered 20.2 million international arrivals, earning it the title of the most visited city that year.

This year, Istanbul secured second place on the list with 23 million arrivals, followed by London, Hong Kong, Mecca, Antalya, Dubai, Macau, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.

A Thai gem

This Thai gem boasts cultural landmarks, vibrant markets, and unique experiences that attract visitors from around the globe. It offers a wealth of attractions, ranging from cultural sites to modern attractions, blending rich history with contemporary life.

Known for its lively streets and nightlife, Bangkok’s main city attractions, such as the Grand Palace, Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), and the Chatuchak Market, draw a large number of visitors every year.

A name that’s a mouthful

Interestingly, Bangkok holds the Guinness World Record for having the longest official city name in the world.

Its full name is: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit, which translates to: “The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarma.”, N1 writes.
