Mostar’s southern bypass is a project that has been awaited for years. Construction began in 2006, but due to numerous challenges, including unresolved property and legal issues, obtaining permits, and securing financing,the entire process progressed slowly. The construction and completion of the final phase is of great importance for the city of Mostar, as it will help reduce traffic congestion and bottlenecks on city streets.
All freight and transit traffic through Herzegovina currently passes through the narrow city center of Mostar, as heavy vehicles have no alternative route. As a result, traffic congestion has become part of everyday life in the city. The construction of the southern bypass is therefore a priority not only for Mostar, but for the entire Herzegovina region.
“The bypass consists of a route with a total length of approximately 2.39 kilometers. It includes the construction of the Privorac tunnel, with two tubes and a total length of 180 meters, as well as the Rodoč viaduct, which is 168 meters long. At the end of the route, traffic exits via a roundabout onto a local road,” Ljubo Pravdić, Director of the Public Company Roads of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, said.
The construction of the Mostar bypass is a project that has been awaited for more than 20 years. Its completion, planned within the next two years, will finally relieve the city streets of heavy transit traffic.
Works on the final phase of construction of the southern bypass in Mostar are proceeding according to plan, officials from the relevant ministry confirmed.
The value of this section of the route amounts to 32.4 million BAM.
“This phase of the project is financed from the budget of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the same way as other road projects across the Federation. For example, the Tuzla–Sarajevo road section and the transversal road in Sarajevo from the Stup interchange to Sarajevo Airport are currently financed from the Federation’s budget. Previous sections of the bypass were financed through loans from international financial institutions,” Danijel Kuzman from the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina said.
“With the completion of this section, all transit and heavy traffic will be redirected to this road, which will significantly relieve traffic in the city of Mostar. I believe this is the project’s greatest contribution. At the same time, this is a fast road connecting Corridor Vc and the motorway with the hinterland of western Herzegovina. It also provides a connection through which Mostar gains access to one of its largest industrial zones, Miljkovići,” Mario Kordić, Mayor of Mostar, said.
The completion of this final section is planned within the next two years, when the Mostar bypass will finally become fully operational. The total value of the southern bypass project amounts to nearly 97 million BAM.
