Multiple Explosions Reported in Venezuelan Capital

At least seven explosions have rocked the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

Thick smoke has blanketed the city and the area around a military base in southern Caracas is without power, witnesses told Reuters.

It is not yet clear what caused the explosions.

The blasts come as the US military has been targeting ships it says are carrying drugs. Venezuela said on Thursday it was open to discussing action with the United States to combat drug trafficking.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said in an interview published on Thursday that the US wants to force a change of government in Venezuela and gain access to its vast oil reserves through a months-long pressure campaign that began in August with a massive military deployment in the Caribbean Sea.

In the US, Maduro has been accused of narco-terrorism.

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is behind a drone strike last week on a port believed to be used by Venezuelan drug cartels. It was the first known direct operation on Venezuelan soil since September, when the US began striking ships it says are transporting drugs.

US President Donald Trump has threatened for months that he could soon order strikes on land targets in Venezuela.
