Elon Musk has said he is developing a rival to Wikipedia through his artificial intelligence startup xAI, announcing plans for a platform called “Grokipedia.”
Musk, the owner of social media platform X, said the new service would be a “huge improvement” over the long-established online encyclopedia, whose entries are created and edited by volunteers.
The billionaire has long accused Wikipedia of political bias, claiming it reflects left-wing views. Musk himself has increasingly aligned himself with right-wing views.
David Sacks, a Musk ally who was recently appointed by President Donald Trump as the commissioner for artificial intelligence in his administration, criticized the use of Wikipedia content to train AI software shortly before Musk’s announcement.
The name Grokipedia comes from xAI’s chatbot Grok, which Musk has described as “maximally truth-seeking.” However, Grok has been controversial in recent months after making anti-Semitic statements, which Musk’s company has attributed to faulty programming.
